Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has wrapped up a high-profile visit to Vietnam that underscored Bangkok’s push to translate diplomatic goodwill into deeper economic integration, with officials from both nations placing trade, investment, and next-generation industries at the heart of an increasingly ambitious partnership.
The trip, held during the 50th anniversary year of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Vietnam, sought to build on their recently elevated Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while reinforcing their shared role within ASEAN amid a shifting global economic landscape.
Accompanied by senior cabinet ministers and a delegation of leading Thai business figures, Anutin used the visit to promote closer government and private-sector collaboration, stressing that Thailand and Vietnam possess complementary strengths capable of supporting long-term regional growth.
‘Three Connects’ strategy targets future industries
One of the visit’s central themes was the “Three Connects” strategy, designed to deepen cooperation through stronger supply chains, closer local economic linkages and alignment on sustainable development.
Speaking at the Thailand-Vietnam Investment and Business Networking 2026 conference in Hanoi, Anutin highlighted the role of private enterprise in driving growth, while officials from both governments pointed to emerging opportunities in clean energy, digital technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.
More than 100 leading business figures from major Thai and Vietnamese companies attended the forum, discussing collaboration across sectors ranging from industrial estates and logistics to tourism, food production, and renewable energy. Participants also floated ideas for joint investment projects in third countries, including renewable energy initiatives in neighboring Laos.
The business agenda reflects increasingly ambitious trade goals. While bilateral commerce exceeded US$24 billion last year, officials signaled their intention to substantially expand that figure in the coming years through improved connectivity and investment facilitation.
Thailand pushes follow-through with new trade mechanism
Following his return to Bangkok, Anutin told cabinet colleagues that the visit’s success would ultimately be measured by how areas of cooperation are followed through with implementation.
He instructed multiple ministries and economic agencies to accelerate follow-up work and tasked Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun with establishing a Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTC) aimed at removing commercial barriers and creating a permanent mechanism for consultation between the two countries.
Government spokesperson Rachada Dhanadirek said the initiative is intended to help transform Thailand and Vietnam from trading partners into “partners for the future,” while ensuring cooperation generates concrete benefits through job creation, investment and expanded business opportunities.
Music and conservation as a softer touch to strategic ties
Although economic issues dominated the agenda, the visit also highlighted the softer dimensions of bilateral relations.
At a gala dinner hosted by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Anutin joined musicians on stage to perform traditional melodies on a Vietnamese instrument resembling Thailand’s ranat ek, drawing applause from officials and business leaders alike.
The two governments also reaffirmed cooperation on Sarus crane conservation, with Vietnam thanking Thailand for previous transfers of the endangered birds and Bangkok indicating its willingness to provide additional support as both nations commemorate five decades of diplomatic ties.
Overall, the visit showcased a relationship that is steadily broadening well beyond commerce into technology, environmental cooperation, and cultural exchanges, while positioning Thailand and Vietnam as increasingly indispensable partners in an ASEAN region that seldom stands still.
